I made the choice purely as a footballer. I joined a top club in Germany with ambitions and a plan. The transition was easier since we used to live in Düsseldorf, close to Mönchengladbach, where my wife grew up.”
“You can only truly understand what it’s like by training here daily. Bayer Leverkusen allows for peaceful work; there’s no chaos, unlike other clubs that attract more attention. This is a benefit. The pressure at Arsenal is different. However, we have high ambitions, knowing the team has immense potential. If we continue this way and remain grounded, we can achieve success,” Xhaka remarked, reflecting on the differences between Arsenal and Leverkusen.
Now, Xhaka is focused on football, discussing the contrast between playing against Alonso and under his management: “He was extremely challenging. His intelligence, passing ability, and timing meant you didn’t even need to press him. He conveys that to us now. I feel I’ve progressed in this area during my two months in Leverkusen. He points out the small details that elevate a good midfielder to a top midfielder.”
With Alonso maximizing the potential of his Leverkusen squad and Xhaka stating that “at Leverkusen, the six position suits me perfectly,” the Werkself look forward to a potentially historic season. After six matchdays, they sit atop the Bundesliga table and show no signs of dropping down.
