Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher have raised concerns about Gabriel Martinelli’s place in Arsenal’s starting lineup ahead of their crucial Premier League clash with Manchester City this weekend. Both pundits believe that the Brazilian winger’s position is in doubt after a series of lackluster performances, including his display during Arsenal’s goalless draw against Atalanta in their Champions League opener.
Arsenal struggled to create clear scoring opportunities against Atalanta, with Martinelli missing the team’s best chance in the second half. This missed opportunity has now extended Martinelli’s goalless and assist-less streak to 17 games, which has put pressure on his starting role, particularly with such a high-profile game coming up.
Jamie Carragher voiced his thoughts on the matter, saying Martinelli’s spot in the lineup for Sunday’s match at the Etihad Stadium is at risk. Carragher noted the absence of Martin Odegaard, who missed the game against Atalanta, as a significant factor in Arsenal’s creative struggles. He pointed out that Odegaard’s ability to connect with Bukayo Saka and unlock space for his teammates was sorely missed, while Kai Havertz, who was tasked with a similar role, didn’t quite fit into the system effectively.
Carragher suggested that Arsenal might consider bringing in Leandro Trossard for the game against City, potentially replacing Martinelli. “Although Martinelli’s position is in question,” Carragher said, “I think the manager will likely stick with him despite his lack of composure in front of goal.”
Thierry Henry, speaking alongside Carragher, agreed that Martinelli is going through a challenging period, especially with his prolonged goal drought. Henry emphasized that this is part of a learning process for both Martinelli and the team, as they must lean on each other and grow as a unit. Henry expressed hope that players like Declan Rice would help Martinelli and others navigate this rough patch, but he acknowledged that Martinelli’s form is a concern.
Meanwhile, former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand weighed in, expressing worry over Arsenal’s lack of attacking threat against Atalanta. Ferdinand highlighted that Arsenal’s creativity and ball retention were not at the level required to challenge a top side like Manchester City. He pointed out that Arsenal will need to be far more clinical and decisive with the limited chances they will likely have against City, noting that Martinelli’s missed opportunity against Atalanta is indicative of the work Arsenal must do to sharpen their finishing.
Ferdinand added, “If they get one or two chances against City, they have to take them. City won’t give them five or six opportunities, so Arsenal’s forwards need to step up and clean up their act, especially in front of goal.”
As Arsenal prepare to face Manchester City, the spotlight will be on Martinelli and whether he can regain his form in time to help his team in what promises to be a critical showdown in the title race.
