Liverpool confirm exit of player who Gerrard once labelled a ‘threat’; it’s not Fabinho.
Liverpool confirmed another player departure late Friday night, though it is not Fabinho, whose proposed move to Al-Ittihad is nearing completion (Fabrizio Romano).
The club announced on their official website that Adam Lewis has returned to Newport County on loan for a second season after being sidelined by injury in 2022/23.
The 23-year-old is the Reds’ fifth loanee, having previously played for Amiens, Plymouth Argyle, and Livingston in addition to his previous stint with the Exiles.
He is Liverpool’s tenth loanee this summer, joining Fabio Carvalho, Calvin Ramsay, Sepp van den Berg, Rhys Williams, Harvey Davies, Owen Beck, James Balagizi, Anderson Arroyo, and Dominic Corness.
Due to the high level of competition for Jurgen Klopp’s first-team left-back position, Lewis has only made one senior appearance at Anfield, which came in the FA Cup fourth round replay win over Shrewsbury in February 2020 (Transfermarkt).
Despite former Reds under-18 boss Steven Gerrard describing him as “such a threat on the left side” (LFC official website), the 23-year-old has yet to make an impact at the senior level in the same way that Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, and Stefan Bajcetic have.
He should be able to make an impact at Newport, where he was in good form until suffering a terrible injury at the worst possible time.
He’d enjoyed a six-game string of one goal and three assists before being injured in February, profiting from being positioned significantly more upfield on the left flank (Transfermarkt).
Lewis will ideally have another productive season on loan at Rodney Parade before returning to Klopp’s squad.
