With only four games left in the 2022–23 season, Allardyce was hurried into Elland Road to take over as manager, replacing Javi Gracia in an effort to avoid being demoted from the Premier League.
Before holding top-four Newcastle United to a 2-2 draw, he lost to eventual champions Manchester City by a razor-thin margin of 2-1 on the road.
After losing 3-1 at West Ham United on the penultimate weekend of the season, Leeds needed to defeat Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the season to have any hope of surviving. The Spurs destroyed them 4-1.
Additionally, Leeds has recently announced that Allardyce won’t be joining the team for the 2023–24 season.
“Leeds United and Sam Allardyce can confirm that both parties have mutually agreed for Sam’s spell at the club to end following the completion of the 2022/23 season,” read the statement.
Despite valiant efforts against Manchester City and Newcastle United, the goal of remaining in the Premier League was not achieved when Sam joined the Whites for the final four games of the season.
“It has been an honor to manage Leeds United, a great club with an incredible fan base who deserve to be in the Premier League,” Allardyce said on the club channels for Leeds. I want to express my gratitude to Angus Kinnear for the chance to work with the club’s personnel and players. Additionally, I want to recognize Karl Robinson and Robbie Keane for their great efforts over the past two weeks.
“At this point in my career, I’m not sure I could commit to taking on this challenge, which could be a lengthy undertaking. Nonetheless, I wish the club much success in the future and hope they return to the Premier League, where they belong.”
Leeds stated that Allardyce’s replacement will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
